Are We Hyper-Dispensationalists?

Monday, July 30th, 2007

By David M. Havard Many years ago, H. A. Ironside 1 published a booklet entitled Wrongly Dividing the Word of Truth in which he threw Charles Baker and C. R. Stam into the same bucket as E. W. Bullinger. Ever since then, we have been labeled as having the same extreme views as Bullinger. Men who have never looked into what we really teach continue to spread the slander started by Ironside back in the 1930’s. Besides, it’s much easier to label us as “hyper” and dismiss us than it is to address us based on the Scriptures. This was recently done again in the July/August 1999 issue of Uplook magazine (published by the Plymouth Brethren). In this their Dispensationalism Issues issue, they presented an excellent overview of dispensationalism. As a matter of fact, we would agree with the majority of what was written. But then, one writer had to add this statement: “One final word. Like all good things, the study of dispensations can be abused. There are some Christians who carry dispensationalism to such an extreme that they accept only Paul’s Prison Epistles as applicable for the church today. As a result, they do not accept baptism or the Lord’s Supper, since these are not found in the Prison Epistles. They also teach that Peter’s gospel message was not the same as Paul’s….These people are sometimes called ultra-dispensationalists or Bullingerites (after a teacher named E. W. Bullinger). Their extreme view of dispensationalism should be rejected.” 2This article was then followed by the following excerpt from Ironside’s book: 3 “What is Bullingerism or Ultra-dispensationalism? This system was first advocated some years ago by Dr. E. W. Bullinger (1837-1913), who was educated at King’s College, London, and was a clergyman in the Church of England. These views have been widely spread through the notes of the Companion Bible which he edited. Dr. Bullinger’s positions are glaringly opposed to what is generally accepted as orthodox teaching. This movement has been carried forth in our day by ardent proponents such as Cornelius Stam, J. C. O’Hair and Charles Baker. [emphasis mine] “There are a number of outstanding tenets of Ultra-dispensationalism. First, it is insisted that the four Gospels are entirely Jewish and have no real message for the Church. Secondly, it is maintained that in the book of Acts we do not have the Church, the Body of Christ, but that the word ekklesia (church), as it is used in that book refers to a different Church altogether than that of Paul’s Prison Epistles. Thirdly, it is contended that Paul did not receive his special revelation of the mystery of the Body until his imprisonment in Rome, and that his Prison Epistles alone reveal this truth and are, strictly speaking, the only portion of the Holy Scriptures given to the members of His Body. All of the other epistles of Paul are relegated to an earlier dispensation and were for the instruction of the so-called Jewish Church of that time. Fourthly, the Christian ordinances, having been given before Paul, are supposed to have no real connection with the present economy, and therefore are relegated to the past, and may again have a place in the future Great Tribulation. “Beside these points, there are many other unscriptural things which are advocated by Bullingerism. Many boldly advocate the sleep of the soul between death and resurrection, the annihilation of the wicked, the universal salvation of all men and demons, the denial of the eternal Sonship of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the denial of the personality of the Holy Spirit. All these evil doctrines find congenial soil in Bullingerism or Ultra-dispensationalism.” “But wait!” You’re thinking, “I don’t believe those things!” Well, neither do I, but these are their tactics. As far as most Acts 2 folks are concerned, we agree with Bullinger’s far out views regarding soul sleep, annihilation of the wicked, universalism, and that the Body of Christ did not start until Acts 28. You either believe in their interpretation of dispensationalism or you are an extremist like Bullinger. They do not recognize any middle ground. This is what we are up against. In the above quote, Ironside lists some the “outstanding tenets” of what he calls “ultra-dispensationalism.” While this is a convenient label, it does not Biblically address the issues. Let us examine what Ironside said (and everyone else seems to repeat) and see if we agree or not. “First, it is insisted that the four Gospels are entirely Jewish and have no real message for the Church”: We do not believe that the four gospels have no real message for the church–Paul says that ALL Scripture is profitable. However, we do believe (because we hold to a literal historical interpretation of the Bible) that Christ’s earthly ministry was in keeping with Israel’s prophetic kingdom program (Matt. 10:5-6; 15:24). We find application in the gospels to be sure, but to say that the basic message of the gospels is directed to the Body of Christ is not being consistent or literal. As Scofield says in his reference Bible, “The Epistles of the Apostle Paul have a very distinctive character….Through Paul alone we know that the church is not an organization, but an organism, the Body of Christ; instinct with His life, and heavenly in calling, promise, and destiny. Through him alone we know the nature, purpose, and form of organization of local churches, and the right conduct of such gatherings. Through him alone do we know that `we shall not all sleep,’ that `the dead in Christ shall rise first,’ and that living saints shall be `changed’ and caught up to meet the Lord in the air at His return. But to Paul was also committed the unfolding of the doctrines of grace…Paul, converted by the personal ministry of the Lord in glory, is distinctively the witness to a glorified Christ, Head over all things to the church which is His Body, as the Eleven were to Christ in the flesh.” And if, according to traditional dispensationalism, the Body of Christ started at Pentecost, how can it be found retroactively in the gospels? The message that Peter preached at Pentecost was an offer of the millennial kingdom to Israel (Acts 2:22) conditional upon their repentance and recognition of Jesus as their Messiah–something that we now know will not happen until after the tribulation. “Secondly, it is maintained that in the book of Acts we do not have the Church, the Body of Christ, but that the word ekklesia (church), as it is used in that book, refers to a different Church altogether than that of Paul’s Prison Epistles”: You’d think they would at least understand this! Regarding the assembly in the book of Acts, we have both “churches” mentioned, depending on the context. If you see the Body of Christ in the gospels, you are closer to a covenant position than a dispensational one. If the Body is found in the gospels, then to be consistent, it also has to be found in the Old Testament prophetic program as well. It was Bullinger (with whom we do not agree) who said that the Body of Christ did not start until the close of the book of Acts and that only Paul’s prison epistles are for us today. “Thirdly, it is contended that Paul did not receive his special revelation of the mystery of the Body until his imprisonment in Rome, and that his Prison Epistles alone reveal this truth and are, strictly speaking, the only portion of the Holy Scriptures given to the members of His Body”: We do not agree with Bullinger on this point either. We do say that Paul received a special revelation (Gal. 1:11-12), but we do not agree that only his prison epistles are applicable to us today. Paul began to receive his special revelation of the mystery upon his conversion in Acts 9. “Fourthly, the Christian ordinances, having been given before Paul, are supposed to have no real connection with the present economy, and therefore are relegated to the past, and may again have a place in the future Great Tribulation”: Regarding the “ordinances” of the church, there is no place in Scripture where water baptism and the Lord’s supper are linked. The Lord’s Supper is a memorial that we are instructed in I Corinthians 11 to keep “until He come.” However, we do feel that water baptism is a Jewish ordinance and is something that was phased out during the transition period. It is also rarely pointed out that we are not unique in understanding that water baptism is not for today. Other groups throughout church history, such as the Quakers, have also come to this same conclusion. “Many boldly advocate the sleep of the soul between death and resurrection, the annihilation of the wicked, the universal salvation of all men and demons, the denial of the eternal Sonship of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the denial of the personality of the Holy Spirit. All these evil doctrines find congenial soil in Bullingerism or Ultra-dispensationalism”: This is the worst sort of guilt by association, but I’m sure you see the implication. If you believe in a mid-Acts position, then, according to them, you also believe in these extreme and unscriptural viewpoints as well. By associating us with these cult-like beliefs we can be discredited without ever having to answer our Biblical arguments. This is what we are up against. These are the same battles, misunderstandings, and deliberate misrepresentations that Pastor Stam has had to fight against for over 60 years–and we must continue to do so today if the gospel of the grace of God is going to continue to go forward. Yet rather than discourage us, these things should motivate us. We know what we have found. We know how confused we used to be. We can honestly say that this is a more consistent and literal approach to Scripture. We no longer have to explain away what the Bible clearly says in verses such as Acts 2:38. We know that by reading the Body of Christ back into the gospels, we rob them of their distinctive kingdom character. By not understanding the difference we either have to make the clear statements in the gospels (such as a distinction between Jew and Gentile and water baptism) conform to Paul’s epistles (where he says there is no difference between Jew and Greek, and that he is the apostle to the Gentiles) by explaining them away or we have to read the gospels into Paul’s epistles and make them conform to the message in the gospels (which is what John MacArthur has done with “Lordship Salvation”). We are not the wild-eyed radicals that the theological media tries to portray us as. We are in agreement with the overwhelming majority of traditional dispensationalism. Our two primary points of disagreement are that we see the Body of Christ starting with the conversion and call of the Apostle Paul and that water baptism is not a requirement for this dispensation. Let us stand firm in proclaiming the unique message revealed to and through the Apostle Paul. It is like telling others about our faith in Christ. We know what it has done for us. We know that it has cleared away our confusion. Let us graciously and boldly share with others what this message has done for us. Endnotes 1. A New Option for Weight Loss Surgery

Monday, July 30th, 2007

By Michael Lewis These days, Jennifer Secrist has little interest in idle activities. The 23-year-old loves to rock climb, hike, ride her mountain bike, and do almost anything that gets her outside and moving. “I can’t stand to sit around,” she tells WebMD. “I have so much energy now it’s amazing.” Weight Loss Surgery ————————————————— Her secret: weight loss surgery that leaves her with a smaller stomach while leaving her with smaller scars than the traditional surgery. What makes Secrist’s story truly amazing is that in less than two years she has lost 107 pounds, thanks to adjustable gastric banding, a surgical procedure that is commonly performed in Europe, but has only been recently approved for use the U.S. The surgery can be performed laparoscopically, which means small tools are guided by a small camera through small incisions in the abdomen. The traditional weight loss procedure in the U.S., gastric bypass, involves a large incision to surgically alter the stomach and make it smaller. The Midland, Mich. woman traveled to Sweden to get the surgery, and her mom and dad later made the trip for the same reason. Adjustable Gastric Banding —————————————– Adjustable gastric banding is far less popular here than gastric bypass surgery. Banding has been done in the U.S., yet previously required open surgery, with all its potential complications. But two new studies find the laparoscopic approach for banding to be a safe and effective weight loss option for people who are 100 pounds or more overweight. The studies, reported in the latest issue of the journal Annals of Surgery, found that patients who underwent gastric banding surgery lost roughly 50% of their excess body weight within two years. The procedure involves the implantation of a hollow silicone band placed around the top of the stomach, which is adjusted to determine how much food the stomach can hold. The adjustment is made by inflating or deflating the band using salt water piped in trough a tube attached to a port placed under the skin near the breastbone. Several types of bands are available in Europe, but the FDA has approved only one - the Lap-Band system made by the California firm BioEnterics System. One of the newly published studies evaluated the Lap-Band device in 500 morbidly obese French patients. Researcher Franck Zinzindohoue, MD, and colleagues reported a 53% excess weight loss at two years, with 10% of patients having to have second operations due to complications. No deaths were reported among the patients. The outcomes were much better than those reported in a recent study finding that more than half of patients abandoned the band in favor of gastric bypass surgery. The authors attribute their good outcome to a procedure they developed to reduce the incidence of band slippage, one of the most common complications of gastric banding. Some Patients Are Unhappy Because They Did Not Loose As Much Weight As They Wanted ————————————- Still, in an accompanying editorial, weight loss surgeon John M. Kellum, MD, says surgeons in America may want to think twice before recommending gastric band surgery over gastric bypass. He no longer performs gastric banding, and says most of his patients who had the banding procedure were unhappy with it because they did not lose as much weight as they had hoped to. “Some of my patients actually gained weight, which never happens with gastric bypass,” he tells WebMD. “We were also troubled by the fairly high number of patients who had complications with the band.” Kellum says a newer type of band from Sweden may be safer for patients than the Lap-Band, but it has not been studied in the U.S. In the second new study, authors claimed a lower rate of band erosion and slippage. But the procedure is not recommended for all patients, especially the heaviest, which Kellum says could restrict its usefulness among American patients. “American patients tend to be heavier than those in Europe, and the heavier the patient the higher the likelihood that complications will occur,” he says. Jennifer Secrist, who now weighs 140 pounds and is a size 6, says she knows of a few gastric band patients, or “bandsters,” who have had trouble losing weight with the procedure. But she would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone whose health is jeopardized by morbid obesity. She publishes a web journal of her process to inspire others. “I want people to know there are alternatives to being heavy,” she says. “This has done so much for me. I can’t begin to describe it.” — You may reprint or publish this article free of charge as long as the bylines are included. Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

By Arjun Mukherjee When we speak of stealth-based video games, Tom Clancys Splinter Cell immediately comes to our mind. Developed by the Ubisoft Montreal, Tom Clancys Splinter Cell is a three dimension action packed and adventure oriented game. The game is basically built on the Unreal Engine 2. What makes it different? Why this game?Unlike the ordinary action games, a stealth-based game that is also called as Sneak em ups game requires a lot of patience. The game pattern of lurking quite stealthily not being detected by the enemy and then surging on the unaware enemy silently to eliminate them is something that requires huge concentration and determination added to Himalayan patience. Stealth-based games are there for quite some times now but with the coming up of Metal Gear Series in 1998 and the Tom Clancys Splinter Cell, they got a new lease of life. The evolutionSplinter cell is a video game series which has become very popular of late. When the series of novels were written with the pseudo name David Michael little did one knew that Tom Clancy would be able to convert his writings to a mass winning video games series. It was first released on November 18th in North America for the Xbox game console. Thereafter in the year 2003 it was made compatible to PC, PlayStation 2, Game Cube and Game Boy Advance. One interesting factor was the version used for GBA and for console differed from each other though the basic plot continued to be the same. Video cinemas were made available in PS2 and Gamecube versions. The Third Echelon, Splinter Cell, and Sam FisherIn the Unites States Government Agency NSA, the Third Echelon is the wing that takes up direct action when passive means fails to deliver results. Third Echelon on turn deploys the Splinter cell a unit that is small, very sharp and almost invisible, to perform the task. Sam Fisher is the first Splinter of this cell. He, however, is supported by a remote team helping out him in his operations. The lone operator is used to destroy dangerous data and accessories and to eliminate enemies when required. The Splinter cell video gameTom Clancys Splinter Cell is the first game in a series of stealth-based video games created by Tom Clancy. The game has Sam Fisher, the American NSA Black Ops Agent as hero and Irving Lambert as his boss. Two popular actors, Michael Ironside and Don Jordan have lent their voices to the characters of Sam Fisher and Irving Lambert respectively. Get Game Cheats at : Splinter Cell Cheats The Splinter Cell Game playThough the Splinter Cell of Tom Clancy is compared more with the Metal Gear series that was nearer in terms of time-gap, it is more in line with the cult PC series named Thief which was a far older game version. Splinter cell game is all about sneaking around in the dark, and then attacking the enemy without giving them a chance to react. Some interesting gadgets are provided like the night vision, thermal vision, both of whom help in spotting the enemies in the dark and in the night. Added to this is a pistol with silencer used for combat by Sam Fisher. He is also highly trained in weaponless combats. Spirit of the Game Though the game is all about action, stealth and moving in darkness surprising the enemy, the basic spirit of the game is to highlight intelligence and speed against brute force. This is what makes the game an intelligent mans paradise and also help sharpen his own instincts and reaction multiple times. The game is particularly good for students to improve their intelligence quotient and to face unforeseen situations with quick and effective reactions. Do’s and Don’ts of Military Care Packages for Soldiers

Wednesday, July 18th, 2007

By Sarah Smiley Sending a care package to your loved one deployed overseas seems so easy, doesn’t it? You just box up some cookies, attach a sweet card, and it’s ready to go, right? If only it were that easy. Sending mail to ships/units overseas is tricky for many reasons (slow processing, mail limitations, etc.) but one of the most confounding is this: unless you’ve been deployed yourself, it’s hard to know exactly what a Soldier or Sailor might want. After two deployments (and a picky husband), here’s what I’ve learned about military care packages. Try Not to Embarrass: You might think sending a life-size portrait of your toy poodle dressed in a ballet skirt is hilarious, but chances are your husband won’t be laughing when he has to carry the cumbersome “pooch” back to his room and past all his friends. You never know where your spouse will open his package, or whom he’ll be with. If you think he’ll be humiliated for anyone to know you sent him pink boxer shorts, either don’t send them or give him a heads up about the contents of the box. Similarly, if you’re sending something that might embarrass YOU (uhmmm….pictures), make sure you don’t surprise your beloved, or he might unknowingly cast your photos to a group of nosey friends peering over his shoulder as he opens the box. Don’t Douse the Box/Envelope with Perfume: Women think this is wonderful, to spray perfume all over a man’s gift or letter. And honestly, our men probably like to receive the smelly treasures too. But when your husband has to carry that letter through three hallways and up four ladders back to his room, he may not be thrilled dragging a cloud of feminine perfume behind him. Remember, the military is notorious for issuing its members “call signs” or “nicknames” at their weakest, most embarrassing moment. If you don’t want your husband to be called “Christian Dior” for the rest of his career, go easy on the scents. Steer Clear of Chocolate: When you send something via an FPO address, you never know where it will wait in transit before it gets to its destination. Your carefully prepared box of chocolates may wait onboard a ship in the Persian Gulf before being delivered to your spouse — if you don’t want that package to be a big, melted, gooey mess, don’t send chocolate (or anything else that can melt). Keep it Small: Keep in mind your loved one may not have much personal space in his overseas accommodations. Chances are good he has no place to store the giant smiley face pinata the kids made for him, and it will end up being a burden rather than a pleasure. Things that can be stored easily (small drawings and pictures, travel game sets) and things that can be consumed (food, toiletry items) rate high on most Soldier’s and Sailor’s lists. Keep it Personal: Remember your loved one has not been home for a really long time — what might seem silly or boring to you (an audio tape of the children fighting over the Nintendo) will be like a little piece of home for your spouse. Send things to remind your Soldier/Sailor of the things he loves (his children, family, favorite foods, taped reruns of his favorite TV shows). Make it Fun: Deployed Soldiers and Sailors are working almost non-stop and with little new scenery or change of pace. They don’t have the option to go to Barnes and Noble for awhile to “get out” and see something new. So bring the fun and the new to them. My husband always likes getting DVDs, CDs, books, and sports magazines. He’s also pointed out that it is hard to get a “real” American newspaper when he is deployed, so the local paper from home is always appreciated (especially the Sports section). Remember these Soldiers and Sailors are living without many of the comforts and conveniences of home. Therefore, mail call is a welcomed opportunity to receive something new and different to look at….things they can’t get on the ship. Make it Frequent: Mail Call can be the highlight of the day for any deployed man or woman. Even something as small as a crayon drawing from a two-year old can bring joy to your loved one! Make it a point to send something….even if it’s just a letter….as frequently as you can! Has Your Lawnmower Been Lacking In Performance

Monday, July 16th, 2007

By Andrew Caxton People love to have great looking lawns and grass areas, but sometimes they absolutely dread having to cut the lawn. Grass can grow at quite a fast rate and therefore it needs to be cut on a regular basis. Without a good and reliable lawnmower, the grass may become overgrown or look messy. So, if you do have the right one, it can make the dreaded job a lot easier for yourself. Types of Lawnmowers Available There are quite a few different types of lawnmowers out there and people will have an argument of both good and bad for all of them. A lot of people like and prefer the electric lawnmowers over the gasoline powered ones. The benefits of having a good working lawnmower are clear to see. If your lawnmower is getting old, it may start to miss patches of grass or it might not cut as well as it used to. Also, some older lawnmowers have a tendency to cut out or take a while to get started. That is why it is important to have a good lawnmower to ensure the grass gets cut properly. Another thing to consider is the fact that the lawn will not look good if the grass hasnt been cut straight and properly, so a good lawnmower will help to keep them looking trim and proper. What Should You Consider When Buying a New Lawnmower? There are a few different aspects that you may need to consider if you either need to replace an old lawnmower or you just dont have one but you need one. Firstly you will need to see how big your lawn is and then decide if you think an electric one would be good enough to do the job. They are cheaper to run compared to the gasoline ones and they can also be more reliable. The problem with an electric lawnmower is that it is powered up by a cable so it will only go so far. With a gasoline lawnmower it can go as far as you want it to, but it can be extremely noisy and it can also be more pollutant too. Also, you need to consider your budget and see how much you are willing to spend on one. It is best to shop around and get the best one you can find for your budget. You want a lawnmower that is going to do a great job and that is reliable. If you get a decent quality one, it should last a lot longer and therefore it would be worth spending the extra money on it. Could Positive Thinking Help You Lose Weight?

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

By Isabelle Epstein “Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions.” - Mark Twain I know the following may sound strange, but like everything else in life, Weight management is a matter of choice. The little secret is to decide what you want and to “stick” to it.No more doubts, no more self destructive thought of any kind are to be allowed in your mind. A little trick of mine I like to use, whenever a doubt tries to make his way in my mind, is to automatically picture myself slim with a healthy and lean body full of energy, glowing with health and happiness. Wow, that feels good. It always brings a smile and a warm feeling Walt Disney said: “If you can dream it, you can do it”. Shouldn’t we give it a try? Try it. Remember this feeling, and use it whenever you need some help to discard your doubts. We must conquer these self defeating thoughts that pop up from time to time. You know what you don’t want. You don’t want to be overweight. You don’t want any health problem. You don’t want to buy extra large size clothes. You don’t want to feel tired. You don’t want to feel depressed. You don’t want your weight to hold you back. You don’t want.. , you know better than me what you do not want, please fill the blanks. Now that you and I know what we do not want, why not choose what we do want. “I don’t want to be overweight”, becomes “I want to be slim, I want to weight xxx pounds/kilograms.I want to wear a size xxx.” “I don’t want any health problem”, becomes “I want to be healthy”. Even better “I am healthy”. “I don’t want to buy extra large size clothes”, becomes “I want to buy size S/M clothes”. “I don’t want to feel tired”, becomes “I am full of energy”. “I don’t want to feel depressed”, becomes “I am confident and enthusiastic”. “I don’t want my weight to hold me back”, becomes “I can do anything I choose”. The best way I found to overcome my negative thoughts is to think and believe in their opposites. The best trick is the shift to positive thinking; turning every single “I don’t want” to “I want” or “I am”. You are probably wondering what that has to do with weight management. Good question. Well, it seems to be a matter of focus. We attract what we focus on. Some call it focus, some call it the law of attraction, some call it the law of cause and effect, others call it positive thinking. If you concentrate on being overweight, you will stay overweight. If you concentrate on having a slim and divinely shaped body, you will get such a body if you take the needed actions to become slim and fit. At first I was very skeptical about the law of attraction. I tried to diet, to exercise but still could not reach my ideal weight. I changed my nutrition to healthier foods, I made progress but it was still a struggle to maintain this ideal weight. I had to change something to get better results. I had to believe in myself. I had to believe I could trim this extra weight and get permanent results. Are you getting the results you desire or are you still struggling with your weight? Are you going to gain weight if you start thinking positively? Why not give it a try? It could work for you as well.
